Remote, Hybrid, or In-Person - How Companies are Maintaining Its Culture in 2022

It's so important to us at Centaur Labs to get the team together to collaborate, celebrate, and connect with each other beyond Zoom -- which is why we get the team together in-person quarterly. Ably is a remote-first organization, we take time every quarter to come together, alternating between team and company summits! Our last summit this past July, we glamped in the English countryside where we reflected, chatted about company goals, and of course, had a rocket building contest!

Drift went Digital First in January 2021 (meaning that remote is the primary experience for our employees, but we have Conversation Spaces all over the world for Drifters to collaborate in).

Since then we've found many creative ways to get our teams together and keep the company culture strong, both virtually and in person. Some favorites include a virtual magic show, a virtual beer & cheese tasting, and in-person events such as a boat cruise around Boston Harbor that our Company Success team recently enjoyed!

We think it’s important for employees to have fun. At Vestmark, we host in-office and virtual events throughout the year that allow our employees the opportunity to connect and give back to the community.

At Amwell, we use employee feedback to influence or work environment and guide our culture – it’s employee feedback that led us to become a Virtual First company in the first place.

As a result of employee feedback, and in an effort to continue supporting a healthy work-life balance for our team, we recently implemented company-wide shutdowns to enable more uninterrupted time off, launched designated mental health days and a volunteer day, as well as summer Fridays – all of this is in addition to our unlimited PTO policy.

At MoEngage, we wanted to celebrate our annual anniversary and created a "Movana" event globally which our teams could travel to.

We got all of our teams together in person to bond and celebrate one another, and the achievements we've made over the last year as a company. We had our US team meet in Boston; our India and Brazil team met in Goa, India; our Southeast Asia team met in Bali, Indonesia; and our Europe team met in Barcelona, Spain.

As a hybrid company with many of our employees working fully remote, Zapata has made it a priority to give our teammates opportunities to meet in-person.

We encourage our employees to attend in-person events, from team meetups to employee appreciation trips to IndyCar races with one of our customers, Andretti Autosport. While the in-person events are important, we also like to host virtual team building events, for example game night over Zoom.

Starburst undeniably puts our people (i.e. All-Stars) first in our remote-friendly environment. We encourage and enable our people to do their best work and be the best versions of themselves while at work.

We work hard and definitely have fun along the way. To achieve this we spent a lot of time thinking about programs to bring our people together, strengthen relationships, and reveal our silly sides. [😁] A few of these notable events include a baby photo guessing game, a talent show, a Halloween costume contest, a chocolate mousse-making lesson, and virtual exercise classes.

Our most recent, and by far most successful and belly-laughing, event was PechaKucha! PechaKucha presentations are slideshows of images only (no words), each auto-advancing after 20 seconds. We asked our All-Stars to submit presentations on any subject of their choosing, the more creative the better, for our executives to present! The entertaining catch was that the executives presented blindly and had no time to prepare in advance. We had a blast witnessing the improv talents and creativity of both our executives and global All-Stars!

At Rue Gilt Groupe, giving back to our communities is an important part of our culture and an example of how we live our values of Kind, Passionate, Collaborative, Innovative, Tenacious, and Empowered. In our hybrid structure, we host volunteer events both on-site and remotely to give all Associates a chance to participate and give back. Around the world, our local Recorded Future culture teams maintain a sense of community amongst 900 employees in our seven global locations.

Whether that is through coffee chats, happy hours, team meals, activities, sports, or holiday and seasonal events they ensure employees take time to bond with each other and take care of their own wellbeing.  With more of our workforce being remote or hybrid, we made sure to have a dedicated culture team that also engages these employees.

Amongst other things, Recorded Future supports regional gatherings for these employees, organizes fun trips (ski, golf, etc.), and much more.

Engagement for our remote employees also happens fully virtually. For fun, employees across the globe participate in March Madness or Fantasy Football. We also make sure remote employees are able to participate in our charitable events for example through the “Adopt a Unit” initiative, where we send out care packages to military service members that are away from home. In September, Recorded Future will be piloting our new Language Cafes, where employees sign up to learn a new language from a colleague who speaks a language different from their own, fully remotely. Currently, there are 40+ languages spoken across the company.

The Hometap team is still working remotely, but we're finding a lot of opportunities to connect with our teammates face-to-face and virtually.

Over the last few weeks, we participated in a community service event where team members could contribute in-person or donate to the cause virtually, celebrated an office opening for those going hybrid, and hosted a virtual paint-and-sip. Diversifying the types of opportunities for our team to connect has been key to keeping our culture alive and well.

At NuvoAir, we have a number of different activities that help celebrate our culture throughout the year: 

CoffeeBuddies: It's a chance to grab a virtual social coffee with someone from the NuvoAir team! At the beginning of the month, we randomly pair team members from different locations and teams. Once the pairs have been made, they find a time that works for both of them to meet and grab a virtual coffee together. 

Fika & Learn: It's a monthly meeting where a team member presents a project they are working on or a passion/hobby they have. It's an hour for the team to discuss non-work related topics and spend some social time together. 

Regional meet ups and in-person holiday party: We celebrate the end of year by meeting in person in each of our 3 main locations and spending time together doing team bonding activities, city tours, etc.

Team member trivia: we play team member trivia during our weekly All Hands meeting where we share fun facts about different team members. It's a fun way to get to know new hires as the team grows.

CarGurus' recent hybrid ERG (Employee Resource Group) Fair connected Gurus on-site and at home to celebrate our vibrant and inclusive community. Teams visited different in-person and virtual “booths" for intros, updates, games, and prizes from our inspiring ERG leaders… building their knowledge, networks, and CG swag collections along the way. A happy hour and raffle capped off the day.

In August 2022 mablers from across the globe gathered at our Downtown Boston HQ and explored Cape Cod and Martha's Vineyard for mabl's annual offsite. 

Bringing folks together and making space during that time for natural collaboration and team building has helped strengthen people's sense of belonging at mabl. It really shows in the quality of the work and collaboration we have done together since.

At Forward Financing, we’ve implemented an Employee Choice policy – our people can work remotely (anywhere in the U.S.!), in our Boston office, or create their own hybrid happy medium.

We’ve continued to foster our culture both in-person and virtually with bi-weekly company huddles, monthly DEI workshops, and several monthly volunteer opportunities.

This summer, we hosted our first semi-annual Forward Palooza where we gathered all employees from across the country for a week of in-person business updates and team building in Boston. We can’t wait for our next one coming up this December!

At the end of July, we celebrated "Christmas in July" with cookie decorating lessons at CartonCloud. In the week leading up, we all received cookies and icing packs, along with glitter, sparkles, and chef hats!

It was fabulous to have an expert guide us through, and whilst we enjoyed putting our creative talents to work, we were able to engage in a very relaxed and casual banter over Zoom!!

In mid-September, Salsify will be hosting parties for our employees around the world to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of our global impact in the e-commerce space.

Employees will gather in our 3 main hubs, Boston, MA, Paris, France and Sydney, Australia, to connect with their colleagues in person, and toast to everything we have accomplished in the past decade. We will also be ALL celebrating virtually in our all hands. We are looking forward to the bonding and collaboration within and between teams during this event!
